THE LIFE WE BUILD

The Best Things in Life Aren’t Built Overnight

Today is my husband Steve’s birthday (August 19th), and birthdays have a funny way of making us stop for a minute and think about the people we love.

I’ve been with this particular birthday boy for 41 years. 😊 That’s a lot of birthdays, a lot of memories, and a whole lot of ordinary days.

And when you’ve shared that much life with someone, you begin to realize something:

The best things in life aren’t built overnight.

They’re built one ordinary day at a time.

The Ordinary Days Are the Life

When we look back, we tend to remember the big moments—the wedding, the babies, the graduations, the new jobs, the homes, the vacations and the celebrations.

But a life isn’t really built in the highlight reel.

It’s built in all those days in between. The mornings when everyone is rushing out the door. The dinners around the table. The bills that need to be paid. The kids who need rides. The phone calls, the chores, the disagreements, the apologies and the laughter over something that probably wasn’t even that funny.

It’s the showing up.

Again and again and again.

Those ordinary days may not feel particularly important while we’re living them. But stack enough of them together, and eventually you realize:

That was the life.

We Kept Building

When Steve and I started our life together 41 years ago, we certainly didn’t know everything that was ahead of us. Who does?

We’ve built a family, careers, traditions, friendships, memories and a home filled with people we love. Along the way, life has changed us, too.

We’ve had wonderful seasons and difficult ones. We’ve celebrated things we once only dreamed about and navigated things we never expected. We’ve watched our children grow up and build lives of their own, and now we get the incredible joy of watching another generation grow.

Looking back, maybe one of the things I appreciate most is simply this:

We kept building.

Not perfectly. Not always easily.

But together.

Choose Who You Build With

Forty-one years also teaches you something about people:

Who you build your life with matters.

That certainly means the person you choose to love, but I think it goes far beyond marriage. It’s your family, your friends, your coworkers, your mentors, your business partners and the people you trust.

They’re the people who encourage you, tell you the truth, celebrate your wins and sit beside you when life doesn’t go according to plan.

We don’t get to choose everything that happens to us. But we do get some say in who is standing beside us while we go through it.

Choose good people. And be a good person for someone else.

Never underestimate the difference the right people can make in a life.

The Same Is True of Almost Everything Worth Having

The more I thought about this, the more I realized the principle applies to almost everything.

A strong marriage isn’t built on one fabulous anniversary. It’s built through thousands of ordinary Tuesdays. A family isn’t built in one perfect Christmas-card photograph. It’s built through years of loving, forgiving, teaching, laughing, worrying, celebrating and showing up.

A career isn’t built by one great year, one award or one big opportunity. It’s built through years of learning, working, growing and doing the right things when nobody is watching.

Financial security usually isn’t created by one brilliant decision, either. It’s built through a lifetime of small, intentional ones.

And a home?

A home isn’t really built by the beautiful kitchen, the perfect floor plan or the latest finishes. Those things are wonderful, but they aren’t what makes a home.

Home Is Where We Do the Building

Maybe this is one of the reasons I still love what I do so much.

I’ve spent nearly four decades helping people buy houses, but I know the house is only the beginning.

Because after the closing...

Life moves in.

The moving boxes arrive. Someone chooses a bedroom. Pictures go on the walls. Neighbors introduce themselves. Meals are shared and birthdays are celebrated.

Children grow. Traditions begin. People leave. People come home. Grandchildren eventually run through rooms where their parents once played.

And slowly, almost without noticing, a house becomes part of a family’s story.

That’s why I’ve never believed homeownership is simply about owning real estate.

It’s about having a place to build a life.

Don’t Underestimate What You’re Building Today

I think sometimes we become so focused on the next thing that we forget to appreciate what’s being built right now—the next goal, the next house, the next promotion, the next vacation, the next milestone.

There’s nothing wrong with looking forward. I’m a big believer in dreaming, growing and raising our sights.

But every once in a while, it’s worth looking around at what we already have: the people sitting at our table, the work we get to do, the friendships we’ve collected, the family we’ve created and the home we return to at the end of the day.

Because the life we’re dreaming about someday?

We may already be building it today.

Final Thought

So today I’ll celebrate the birthday of the man I’ve had the privilege of building a life with for 41 years.

And I find myself incredibly grateful—for the big moments, for the hard ones that taught us something, and for the people who joined our story along the way. But maybe most of all, I’m grateful for those thousands of ordinary days that somehow became an extraordinary life.

So here’s my birthday thought this year:

Whatever matters most to you—your marriage, your family, your friendships, your career, your financial future, your faith, your home—

Keep building.

Don’t underestimate what small choices, ordinary days and showing up over many years can become.

Forty-one years ago, I couldn’t possibly have imagined all the life that would grow from two people deciding to build one together. Today, I’m so grateful for all of it.

Happy birthday to my favorite person to build a life with. ❤️

Here’s to the good stuff—the people we love, the lives we build, and all those ordinary days that turn out to be anything but ordinary. ❤️

And here’s to all of us continuing to build lives we love. Because maybe that’s what home really is:

Not simply the place we live—but the life we build inside it. 💛
